Fairytale unit
I enagaged my students into thinking critically through a C.I.S (comprehension instructional sequence) unit on Beauty and the Beast (attached below). My students had to read the story of Beauty and the Beast and the poem called, The Enchanted Castle (attached below). We discussed what selfish and selfless meant and gave examples.
Nextly, we filled out a chart (also attached) where the students had to identify examples of selfish and selfless things the characters in the story did. The students had to write down the act, then write the paragraph number they found it in and mark which character portrayed the act of either selfishness or selflessness.
After completing the selfish and selfless charts, we watched the movie Beauty and the Beast. I was shocked at how many students had never saw this movie. After having watched the movie, the students had to think critically to fill in a chart (attached, called matrix). The chart was comparing the story, movie and poem. The studnts had to identify the similarities and differences between the elements in each, how they were each written, the characteristics of the characters in each (whether they acted the same or different) in each, and lastly they had to compare the endings in all three. In order to complete this chart the students had to think critically about all the different elements within the three different pieces of literature.
It's very important to get students to think critically, you can achieve this through, questioning and engaging students in discussions. I always make sure my students are reflective I tell them to stop and think, don't just make snap judgements. When my students give me an answer I always gently ask, "why, or how do you know" or "what are the reasons?" Lastly, I always tell them to think about alternative hypotheses, conclusions, explanations, sources of evidence, points of view, plans, etc. Throughout this Beauty and the Beast unit, I used all of these strategies.
