Conferences
During my internship we had at least one parent teacher a conference a week. We also met to adjust IEP's, there were weeks we had meetings every single morning. During these conferences, we would work with parents/ teachers to figure out what areas the student was struggling with and why their grades were so low. A lot of the time it was due to the child not completing homework assignments. So, as a team, with the other teachers and the parents, we would work together to come up with solutions on how to help this child succeed. We would come up with things like, helping the student become more organized. One way in which we would help this is; suggest the student have a folder they could take home with nothing but homework that they were given that day. Furthermore, the parents usually would suggest that the teacher make sure the student wrote down that homework in their planner and they would sign it every night after the student
completed the assignment. Also, most parents offered their children incentives
for completing their homework in all their classes, for a full week. The teachers usually suggest after school tutoring in the subject that the student’s receiving low test scores in. Another solution is better teacher/parent communication. The teachers and parents often trade e-mail addresses so they can keep in touch with one another better. All of these things contribute to the student’s success.
When meeting for adjustments or creating an IEP for a student, the ideas for that student’s success are a little different. Each child is different and has their own individual needs to become more successful in academics. We usually suggest the child receive more one on one help when possible, or participate in small group activities. For those students who are a little slower at reading, writing or solving problems, we allot them more time to complete in class assignments and tests. There are so many reasons for students to have an IEP, so the lists of accommodations can be very broad. After having sat in on so many parent teacher/IEP meetings, I feel very equipped with the
knowledge I need to be successful in my first year as a new teacher. I have
learned so many accommodations and skills I need to be a successful
communicator and teacher. Communication is the key in any line of work, friendship, marriage etc. In teaching though, I feel it is extremely important for the student’s success.
