ESOL Capstone
During my internship, I had the privelege of working with an ELL student named, Thalia. Thalia is a very sweet little girl who moved here from Cuba, 2 years ago. Thalia can understand and speak English fairly well, but she cannot read or write in English well at all. I completed a SOLOM (Student Oral Language Observation Matrix) on Thalia to see where she was orally. After rating her on the SOLOM I decided to help her creat ea presentation. Below is a link to Thalia's presentation that I helped her work on. I had her do this project to help increase her language proficiency, assist her in becoming more outgoing, and to help her build a sense of pride for her country and heritage. Thalia absolutely loved doing this project with me, she said she felt really special, which made me good. Thalia gained so much confidence from this project and loved having all the kids ask her questions about Cuba. I gained knowledge of how to work with an ELL that was mainstreamed into my regular classroom. I helped Thalia create a presentation on her home country of Cuba, that she could share with the class. Through this project, I helped Thalia increase her comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. As a teacher, it is very imperative to adapt materials and lessons to meet the diverse needs of all your students.
